Surgery to breast reduction in Mexico

Why to make a breast reduction?

Breast reduction surgery offers significant benefits for individuals struggling with the physical and emotional challenges of large, heavy breasts. Overly large breasts can cause chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as skin irritation and difficulty with physical activities. Many individuals also experience emotional distress, feeling self-conscious or frustrated by their body image. By reducing breast size, this procedure helps alleviate these discomforts, restores physical balance, and improves posture. Beyond the physical relief, breast reduction can boost self-esteem, allowing patients to feel more confident and comfortable in their own skin.

FAQ

Benefits and Considerations of the Surgery

Breast reduction offers both physical relief and emotional improvement, significantly enhancing quality of life. Key benefits include:

  • Relief from chronic pain in the back, neck, and shoulders caused by excess breast weight.

  • Improved posture, reducing muscle tension and spinal strain.

  • Less skin irritation and rashes under the breasts.

  • Greater comfort during physical activity and exercise.

  • Better clothing fit and more wardrobe flexibility.

  • A more balanced and proportional body silhouette.

  • Reduction in emotional discomfort or negative self-image related to breast size.

  • Boost in self-confidence and emotional well-being.

Important Considerations:

  • A proper recovery period is essential to achieve the best possible outcome.

  • Scarring is likely, but with good care, scars tend to fade over time.

  • Maintaining a stable weight is key to preserving long-term results.

  • This is not only a cosmetic procedure—it can have important health benefits as well.

What is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. This is achieved by removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin to create a more proportionate appearance while alleviating physical discomfort such as back, neck, or shoulder pain.

Who is a good candidate for breast reduction surgery?

This procedure is ideal for individuals who experience:

  • Physical pain caused by the excessive weight of the breasts.
  • Limitations in performing physical or athletic activities.
  • Recurrent skin irritation beneath the breasts.
  • Low self-esteem or emotional discomfort related to the size of their breasts.

How to prepare for your procedure?

Preparing for your breast reduction surgery is a crucial step in ensuring a smooth and successful procedure. Proper preparation helps minimize risks and promotes a faster recovery. Follow these essential steps to get ready for your surgery:

  • Plan for Post-Surgery Assistance:Arrange for someone to accompany you to and from the surgery center, as you won’t be able to drive yourself after anesthesia. It’s also helpful to have a friend or family member available to assist with light tasks during your initial recovery period.
  • Refrain from Alcohol and avoid smoking.
  • Follow Fasting Instructions.
  • Avoid taking any blood-thinning medications.
  • Fill Prescriptions Early.
  • Make Travel Arrangements.

How Long Does the Surgery Take?

Breast reduction surgery typically takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, though this may vary depending on the surgical technique and case complexity.

What Type of Anesthesia Is Used?

The procedure is performed under epidural anesthesia, which numbs the upper body while the patient remains awake and pain-free. This approach offers greater safety and a smoother post-op recovery than general anesthesia.

What Are the Postoperative Care Guidelines?

Post-operative care after a breast reduction is essential to healing properly and enjoying the best possible aesthetic and functional results. Follow your medical guidelines closely to ensure a smooth recovery.

Rest and Movement

  • Relative rest during the first 24 hours.

  • No heavy lifting for 6 weeks.

  • Avoid driving for the first week.

  • Sleep on your back for 3–4 weeks, or on your side if tolerated.

Post-Surgical Bra

  • Wear your post-op bra day and night for 6 weeks, without exception.

Hygiene

  • Shower daily using lukewarm water only.

  • Avoid baths, jacuzzis, or hot water.

  • Do not apply any creams on your breasts unless approved by the Soulya medical team.

Medication

  • Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, Naxen, Advil, or consume alcohol or tobacco for the first 3 weeks.

  • All prescriptions must be filled at Mexican pharmacies

Medical Follow-Up

  • Your first post-op appointment will be between days 10–12, when sutures will be removed.

  • You may notice new sutures appearing as swelling decreases—this is normal and will be addressed in future visits.

Massages and Therapy

  • You may begin post-op massages by week 3.

  • Ultrasound therapy to reduce swelling is optional, and our team will provide specific guidance.

Physical Activity

  • Light exercise may begin at week 6, and weight training at week 8, depending on how you feel.

  • Sexual activity can resume by weeks 3–4, if tolerated.

Diet and Restrictions

  • Avoid for 3 weeks: flour, sugar, processed, spicy, greasy or salty foods.

  • Focus on lean proteins (chicken, red meat, fish), lots of vegetables throughout the day, and fruit in the morning (pineapple, apple, papaya, hibiscus, plums).

  • Stay well hydrated.

Post-Op Kit

  • Apply SVR cream to bust (not on wounds), abdomen, and back.

  • Apply a thin layer of Cebelia cream directly to wounds.

  • Place the Silicone Tape 5 minutes later (can be reused 4–5 times).

What’s Normal:

  • Pain, swelling, bruising in the first 3 days (bruises change from purple to yellow before fading).

  • Sharp or stabbing sensations during the first two weeks.

  • One breast may appear more swollen than the other. Final results appear between weeks 8–12.

  • Sutures that were not visible at first may emerge once inflammation decreases.

What’s Not Normal:

  • Foul-smelling, green or yellow discharge.

  • Fever, chills, extreme redness or pain.

  • Areola turning very red or black.

  • Lumps, heavy bleeding, or intense pain.

Remember: Every body heals in its own way. At Soulya, we’re with you every step of the way, offering expert care and human support to ensure a safe, beautiful recovery.

Will breast reduction affect my ability to breastfeed?

Breast reduction surgery can impact the ability to breastfeed, depending on the extent of tissue removal and the techniques used. It’s important to discuss your concerns with your surgeon, especially if breastfeeding in the future is important to you.

Will my breast reduction leave visible scars?

Yes, breast reduction surgery involves incisions, which may result in scarring. However, your surgeon will place these incisions in areas where they can be less visible, such as around the areola, under the breast, or in a vertical line. Over time, the scars will fade and become less noticeable.

How long does it take to recover from breast reduction surgery?

Recovery time varies by individual, but most patients take about 1 to 2 weeks off from work or normal activities. You will need to avoid strenuous activities for several weeks. Full recovery, including the final shape and appearance of your breasts, can take a few months.
